Not only had Hayek attempted to get Kirk a position at the University of Chicago, but he had also directed his famous 1957 speech, “Why I am Not a Conservative” against Kirk and T.S. It is at least curious that Mr. Glasner could write his article without mentioning Hayek’s essay, “Why I Am Not a Conservative” (the postscript of The Constitution of Liberty), in which he criticized conservatives for seeking to use government power to impose their moral views on others. Readers may wish to look it up.

At the end of his book The Constitution of Liberty, Friedrich Hayek included a short essay entitled “Why I am not a conservative.” His essay was written in 1978 (Margaret Thatcher became British Prime Minister the following year) and it’s not about American conservatives or Republicans, he was talking about European conservatives and British Tories.

It has much in common with the conservatism Hayek criticized in “Why I Am Not a Conservative,” taking its cue from a direction set by others and saying only “slower, more prudently.” But it is perhaps even less substantive than that.

This is funny, because F. A. Hayek was the author of “Why I am Not a Conservative.” michigander Mar 15, 2015 at 7:28 am - Reply Logicus Prime: yes, the title of the postscript to The Constitution of Liberty, but my recollection is that Hayek always referred to himself as a classical liberal.
